Charlie and Kymani go Untamed Wilds - a play by play - Setup: K in hand: Lone Wolf, Slip Away, Pickpocketing, Emergency Cache, Disguise C in hand: Friends in Low Places, Milan, Disguise, Medical Student, Calling in Favors K in play: Underworld Support, green Covenant, 5 resources C in play: In the Thick of It, FiLP upgrade card (no checked boxes, "Ally"), 1 damage, 1 horror, 5 resources Turn 1: C: play Medical Student(heal to full), Calling in Favors the Student -> find Tetsuo and put into play, explore (Camp->River Canyon) K: play Disguise, Lone Wolf and Emergency Cache Upkeep: K: draw Quick Getaway, now has 5 resources C: draw Crack the Case, now has 3 res (Nothing too special yet. Charlie explores after clearing his trauma, Kymani sets themselves up with econ and an evasion tool) Turn 2: Mythos(1 doom): K: draw Overgrowth, attach to Camp C: draw Creeping Poison > Best-Laid Plans, lose 2 actions Investigator Phase(Inv): C: play Friends in Low Places -> find Bonnie and Library Docent, pay only for Bonnie K: Move(River Canyon), Explore (Canyon > Rope Bridge), Draw a card: Gregory Gry (looking for an investigation tool...) Upkeep: K: draw .25 Auto, now has 7res C: draw Embezzled Treasure, now 3 res (Overgrowth is fine, i can just keep exploring from the Canyon. Best-Laid Plans is a bit of an annoying card, but i'd rather draw it now than later. Not keen on crap in the explore deck, so i'd rather pay two actions now while the game is still quiet. Kymani isn't really able to do anything at the 4 shroud Canyon with 2 intellect, so they keep exploring and after finding a 2 shroud one, they draw in the hopes of getting a Thieves Kit, Lockpick, Pilfer or even just a B&E) Turn 3: Mythos (2doom): K: draw Boa C: Creeping Poison > Arrows from the Trees (1 dmg on Tetsuo, 1 on C) Inv: K: Evade Boa, play Pickpocketing, Evade+Discard Boa -> Pickpocket draw: Psychosis C: play Bonnie, draw a card (Peter S), Clue (8 vs 4 -> success, Bonnie is insane) Upk: K: draw "I'll Take That", 7res C: draw Faustian Bargain, 1res (Holy crap, a Boa. Often, drawing that thing early is just a cause for reshuffling the scenario. Kymani evades it though and tries to discard it with their ability. It's a test 7vs6... and it succeeds. Hell yeah. Playing Pickpocket beforehand was a waaaay too ballsy move and i would not do it again :D Meanwhile Charlie realizes how good Bonnie is. Investigating with her and Tetsuo cranks Charlie's intellect up to 8 which is just impressive.) Turn 4: Mythos (3doom): K: Eztli Guardian -> spawn at Camp C: Voice of the Jungle Inv: C: Clue(success) -> Crack the Case for 4, play Peter, play Medic Stud K: Draw x2 (Stealth, Backstab(3)), play Gregory Gry Enemy phase: Guardian deals a damage to both K and C Upk: K: draw Daring Maneuver, 6res C: draw Crack the Case, 1res (At this point, i was mildly concerned about how far behind i am the usual curve. Turn 4, only 2 clues collected, and that in a scenario where i usually want to get through it as fast as humanly possible. But Kymani refuses to draw an investigation tool and Charlie (for now) only picks up one per turn, so it is what it is. That Eztli Guardian is annoying but i figured i can just take him and get out of his range soon enough.) Quick Recap of the first four turns: 3 locations in play, including the camp. Charlie just cleared the 2 clues from the Canyon, Kymani sits at the Bridge, picking their nose in hopes of finding a clue tool at some point. Both are in shooting range of an Eztli Guardian that sits on the Camp. 3 doom (of 6) on the first agenda, so we have fewer clues than the agenda has doom. Charlie has Medical Student, Bonnie Walsh, Tetsuo and Peter Sylvestre in play. Kymani has Gregory Gry, Lone Wolf and Disguise. Moving on to ... Turn 5: Mythos(4 doom): K: Snakebite #1 -> test success C: Snakebite #2 -> kill Medical Student Inv: K: Uses Map supply -> shoves Arrows from Trees under expl deck, sets up Cloud forest for next card), explores (Bridge -> Cloud Forest), Map again (shove Pit Viper under deck, put Riverside Temple on top) C: Move(Cloud Forest), Clue, Faustian Bargain Enemy phase: Nothing, both are now out of range of the Guardian Upkeep: K: draw Manual Dexterity, now has 8 res C: draw Occult Lexicon, now has 7 res (I really like the Map supply item in RtTFA and i generally use it a lot once there are 3+ encounter cards shuffled into the exploration deck. Sure, it's a few actions spent, but so would be fighting whatever comes out of it or dealing with some Arrow from Trees, Ancient Evils and similar crap. Here i can safely set up my next explore and even prepare the next one. It's not like Kymani has better things to do right now...) Turn 6: Mythos(5 doom): K: draw Curse of Yig C: draw Ancient Evils for 6th doom. Agenda advances. Back of agenda: Roll for poison! K commits Daring Maneuver for a wild and tests 4 vs 3 -> success! Holy crap :) C exhausts Peter, Bonnie, then Peter again for 8 vs 3 -> success! Not today, Untamed Wilds! Inv: C: play Milan, Clue with Tetuso and Milan (6 vs 3), play Occult Lexicon K: move(Canyon), explore(Canyon -> Riverside Temple), Draw a card(Sour Mash) Enemy phase: Eztli Guardian hits K for 1 dmg Upkeep: C: draw Stirring up Trouble, 3 res K: draw Quick Thinking, 10 res (That's the turn i realized that taboo'd Milan doesn't really work all that well with Charlie: If i exhaust him for +3int, i can't also exhaust him for a resource. Ah well. It's not like +3int is bad! Meanwhile Kymani gets the location they found last turn out of the explore deck. In hindsight that was totally unnecessary, i wasn't planning on clueing on it anyways and i am already close to advancing the act. Some luck on the poison roll for Kymani, but to be fair i do have 2 medicine in my supplies so i planned for the worst case anyways. By the way, Tetsuo has been putting in some work with his 1 intellect icon :D Meanwhile Kymani stacks resources from Lone Wolf and the occasional Gry bet without having much to spend it on. But that just means i can put them to work with the map and exploration. Oh, and of course Ancient Evils had to show up eventually. Got lucky so far (spoiler: and will stay lucky), at least with regards to AE) Turn 7: Mythos(1 doom): K: Draw Pit Viper C: Draw Best-Laid Plans -> lose 2 actions Inv: C: Clue K: Evade Pit Viper with Disguise, committing Man Dex and Quick Thinking and betting 3 res from Gry on it -> success by a million -> Pickpocket draw: Lockpicks(0) -> Man Dex draw: Sneak By -> play I'll Take That and put Lockpicks into play for free -> still 3 actions thanks to QT, Move x2 to where Charlie is (Cloud Forest) -> clue with Lockpicks (commit Sneak By, 7 vs 3) -> oversuccess -> Charlie plays Crack the Case for 3 res Upkeep: C: draw Emergency Cache, 7 res K: draw Pilfer, 15 res (Crazy turn, this sort of thing is why i love rogue so much. Evading a Viper that now has to wait another turn to ready, i draw 2 cards and put one of them into play without paying for it, instead i also gain 3 resources. And then i take my other 3 actions :D Hilarious. Also: Holy shit, it's an investigation tool. The worst in the deck, but that Pilfer draw means that it's enough. Between Pilfer, Lockpick and still having a Stirring up Trouble in hand i now know that i can burst the rest of the scenario down if i can find the locations. And that's what the map supply is good for. Onwards, looks like i have a plan now. I have now cleaned two locations from their clues for a total of six which is what i need to advance the act. Obviously i wait with that until next turn.) Turn 8: Mythos (2 doom): K: draw Curse of Yig, this is now their second one. Between that and two damage, they have 4 remaining stamina. C: Snakebite #3, kills Tetsuo who leaves behind... a Crystallizer of Dreams? Okay then! Inv: Spend clues to advance the act. Spawn Ichtaca and engage her with Kymani C: Parley Ichtaca (9 vs 4) -> success, play Embezzled Treasure, play Emergency Cache K: Disguise Evade Ichtaca (7 vs 4) -> success -> Pickpocket draw(Breaking and Entering), discard Psychosis Enemy phase: Ichtaca readies, re-engages Kymani Upkeep: C: Draw Lab Assistant, 9 res (+2 on Treasure) K: Draw Watch This!, 16 res (The Psychosis didn't do anything so far, but with that second Curse of Yig i became a bit more conscious about Kymani's health. So i felt like this was a good time to get rid of it. If i had failed the evade i was ready to just try again instead, there was still a counter or two on the Disguise. Embezzled Treasure can come down now that the end is on the horizon. I kinda wish Kymani had one, too^^ So much money and nowhere to spend it yet. Between Bonnie and Milan it's not really a problem to parley Ichtaca.) Turn 9: Mythos (3 doom): K: draw Snakebite #4 (commit Watch This) -> 6 vs 3 -> draw Curse from earlier Faustian, but green Covenant to the rescue :D -> draw -2 -> success. C: Draw Voice of the Jungle, this is his second one. So far i ignored the first one because it canceled out with Peter Sylvestre but now that's no longer possible Inv: C: play Lab Assistant (draw Med Stud and a second Stirring up Trouble), Parley Ichtaca (9 vs 4) -> success -> Ichtaca goes to VP -> act advances -> the Ruin locations go into explore deck, last action explore -> actually hit Overgrown Ruins blind Oo K: Use the map three times, putting two Vipers and an Arrows from the Trees under the deck Upkeep: C: Draw Friends in Low Places, 7 res (+4 on treasure) K: Draw Agent Fletcher and engage him, 17 res (Huuuuge misplay here that magically worked out. That last action explore was really unnecessary and could've ended really badly. My chances were really rotten, too. It did work out, but it really shouldn't have... that second Voice of the Jungle had me tilted a bit :D Kymani starts working the exploration deck towards the target location and confirms that all sorts of nonsense is still in there. At least the Arrows and Guardians now no longer do anything because Ichtaca is on our side! Agent Fletcher shows up, but i've got something for him... Oh and i am pretty sure my resource count for Charlie is off by 1 in either direction. Probably not relevant though, both investigators have been rich for a while) Turn 10: Mythos (4 doom): K: draws Eztli Guardian, hey thanks for the freebie! C: draw Snakebite #5 -> kills Lab Assistant Inv: K: play Backstab(3) on Fletcher (commit .25 Auto and Stealth) -> 7 vs 2 -> Gry bets 3 on Kymani -> RIP Fletcher, use Map (finding Eztli Ruins and putting it on top), explore (Cloud Forest -> Eztli Ruins) C: Stirring up Trouble (2 clues from Overgrown Ruins, 5 curses into the bag), move twice to Eztli Ruins Upkeep: K: draw Overpower, 18 res C: draw Faustian Bargain, 5 res (+6 on treasure) (As they say in the M:tG community: "Dies to Doomblade" (or at least they used to back when i still played. it's been a while...). It means that a creature can't really be too relevant if it's easily taken out by a common removal card. And that's basically how i feel about Agent Fletcher, he just exists to be backstabbed all day. With the end in sight, i no longer care about the 5 curses for clearing Overgrown Ruins, so off we go into the final turn. Turn 11: Mythos (5 doom): K: draws Snakebite #6 -> success (else Gry would've eaten it) C: draws Brood of Yig Inv: K: plays B&E (success, but no oversuccess) -> 1 clue, plays Pilfer (commiting Backstab and Quick Getaway) -> 8 vs 3 -> success -> 3 clues, engages Brood C: activates Treasure and spends the clues to end the scenario (Kinda stupid from me to not play another turn to crank the Treasure up to 10, but yeah. Tunnel vision, i guess. Anyways, after stalling around for the first half of the scenario trying to find something to be able to investigate, Kymani came through in the end and yoinked up all the clues from the final location in two actions. Had the Pilfer failed, i would've gotten there with investigate + Stirring up Trouble from Charlie as well.) And that was Untamed Wilds. Going in, i expected that Kymani had more or less have to carry Charlie (because Charlie's deck is a bit of a mess at that point, building towards something later on that needs more XP) but it sort of ended up the other way with Charlie coming through when Kymani stalled out due to bad draws. Good showing from both in the end. It sometimes felt like the encounter deck was kind to me, but to be fair there are certainly teams that fail an Untamed wilds with an early Boa and six Snakebites. Coming out of that unharmed and unpoisoned is nice. The Curses of Yig and the Voices of the Jungle also went exactly where i was best able to handle them. Ancient Evils was almost a no-show. With 5 of 9 doom on the final agenda i could've taken another 3 of them with the same result though. So i don't feel this was extraordinarily lucky as such, but it did feel like the duo was extraordinarily well equipped to deal with what came from the encounter deck. A good omen. Final tally: 6XP for both. 8 resources on the Treasure means i will probably not spend any rations in the interlude and have both investigators start with 4 resources anyways. Or, more likely, 3 on Kymani and 5 on Charlie.
